Note: Alexander Trifonov took this photo of the of mountains by Lake Baikal in Russia (wiki link). This photo is a nice landscape shot, but shows off the different shades of white so well.  It’s very hard to capture detail in snow because it has the “bright white” appearance.  Using proper metering modes (wiki link) will allow you to bring out the detail.  Awesome landscape shot!

Tip: When metering for the snow, don’t over expose your photo.  By doing this, there will be no data for the camera to capture the detail in the snow.  A good rule of thumb if you don’t have a tool to meter the lighting, is to look at the on-camera meter.  Adjust your ISO, shutter speed or aperture, so the meter isn’t at 0, but -1.5 to 2 below the recommended exposure setting (link).
